Carry On 2001: A Space Oddity (25/09/2001)CARRY ON...

Space
Tuesday (Manumission)
Thursday (La Troya Asesina)
Saturday (Ministry & Gorgeous)

The most infamous of the after-parties at Space is Manumission's Carry-On every Tuesday morning, though in 2002 La Troya Asesina also launched it's official Carry On La Troya party at Space every Thursday morning...

My first visit to Space was in 2001, with Morten and his Norwegian posse, for the Thursday morning Matinée Group party, and a few weeks later I was back with Fido and his friends for the Carry-On Manumission party. My experience at the latter almost put me off Space, and definitely gave me second thoughts about ever going to a Manumission Carry On again! For me, this was the straightest club environment I'd been in since Hollywood's in Romford more than a decade earlier, and post-Manumission I was feeling a wee bit tired and fraught, so found the security aggressive (okay, they found my collection of Kinder surprises and confiscated them) and the rest of the clubbers aggressively drunk (okay, aggressively straight and drunk)... somehow, however, I ended up going again!

La Troya Asesina After Party (2002)After the penultimate Manumission of 2001, where Colin Peter's wild collection of encores left us in no mood for the party to end, it was no surprise that I ended up at the Carry On at Space afterwards. This was such a good party, that I was left wondering why I'd had such a bad experience there in July! The following week, I was back for the final Carry On Manumission of 2001, when me and Robert proved that you're never too old to party all night long, staying at Privilege until it closed at noon, Space till it closed at 7, called in at Bora-Bora, and still arrived at Los Pasajeros fresh as daisies for dinner that night! I also amazed myself by managing to carry Robert past security without arousing any suspicion... maybe the doctor's surgical cap I was wearing fooled them into thinking I was a medic? For 2002, I had no hesitation in attending any of the Carry On Manumission parties, skipping Manumission itself during August when the invites dried up, but still going to the Carry Ons at Space. For whatever reason, I ended up wearing a beardy-wig on my head throughout the final Carry On Manumission at Space... It made sense at the time!

Despite the Matinée Group's Thursday morning parties proving to be a huge success in 2001, these unofficial La Troya Asesina Carry-Ons were replaced in 2002 by the first official Carry On La Troya party in 2002 - yes, I know there had been a Carry On La Troya party at DC10 in 2001, but since it had spectacularly failed to set the world alight, we won't mention it here... With La Troya residents Oliver and Julian Amour being joined by local DJ gods Ron Burnett and Space resident Jonathan Ulysses, the party once again provided Space with a Thursday morning success. The only downer came when the last party was cancelled, as La Troya itself had closed the week before!

Gorgeous at Space (2002)Matinée Group were also rewarded in 2002, for their success in 2001, gaining the prestigious Saturday morning slot from Café Olé, joining with Gorgeous and Ministry of Sound for their 'Carry On' parties at Space.

Of the three mornings, Saturday's probably has consistently the best atmosphere, the Manumission and La Troya Carry Ons being a necessary evil to meet licensing requirements at their home clubs, but if you can go to all three, do! It was so nice to walk out of a club to a "not a beachday", rather than having to choose between a healthy tan or a healthy club!
