| IBIZA ANTHEMS 2001 | | This started out as a personal top ten Ibiza anthems from summer 2001, but it seems I found more than ten... Originally posted up on my Gaydar profile after I returned from Ibiza that year, I naively thought I could just transpose the HTML coding from there to here... Many hours later, and I've finally tidied up the resultant mess, and taken the opportunity to tidy up a few of the naffer comments (yup, that means I don't think what follows is all that naff). The chart is based on nothing scientific in the slightest, rather on my dodgy at best memory, and a huge quantity of compilation albums! |
Flawless The Ones
Part of DJ Oliver`s closing set at La Troya Asesina, as far back as Y2K, and a guaranteed crowd-pleasing Amnesia anthem from their opening party in June 2001 through to the closing party in September, this now HUUUGE tune still makes me want to dance, and will always take me back to some of my happiest mornings at La Troya...
American Dream Jakatta
By the start of the Ibiza clubbing season in 2001, this reworking of the American Beauty theme was already a familiar club hit in the UK, but fortunately was still novel enough in Ibiza to become a constant floor-filler throughout the summer. From the teasing vocal, "overdrive", into the haunting, xylophone intro, a perfect record to dance to as the sun came up!
Another Chance Roger Sanchez
The first time I danced to this in Ibiza, with friends on the Terrace at Space, it brought tears to my eyes... The first of many tracks last summer to provoke an intense emotional response.
Right On, Right On Silicon Soul
I`m listening to this right now... I`m in Amnesia... bongos are being passed down from the balcony to waiting drummers on the dancefloor... the sun`s breaking through the glass-roofed terrace... I`m dancing opposite the DJ, so get the sun right in my face... on with the shades... my idea of heaven...
Muzik X Press X Press 2
Didn`t catch X Press 2 DJing, but I did hear this track just about everywhere... requires dark cavernous rooms such as the inside of Space to set it off to full effect!
Bel Amour Bel Amour
Heard everywhere last year, another of those early-morning-sunshine Amnesia tracks, equally at home on the darkened main floor of Space, and a very memorably DC10...
Real Life Raven Maize
|
One More Time Daft Punk
It could have been Aerodynamic or Digital Love, but established club anthem One More Time never failed to stir the emotions in whichever of the diverse clubs it was played. In fact, the whole "Discovery" album, from which these tracks were taken, is beautiful, especially the track "Veridis Quo"...
Equitoreal Dubtribe Sound System
|
I Feel Love Depeche Mode
A bit like the Spanish Inquisition, nobody expected this one! When the summer`s Ibiza anthems are dictated by record companies back in the UK months before the clubs even open, it`s refreshing when something so good is also so unexpected. It was weeks before I found out who this was by, as I had no idea what was happening in the UK charts back home. For some reason I`d got it in my head that it was from Fatboy Slim, but I`ve still no idea why...
Starlight Supermen Lovers
One of the biggest anthems of the year... happy, clappy disco nonsense. Love it!
Night @ The Black Harry "Choo Choo" Romero
Three of his tunes hit the spot last year, the others being Tania, and Suck My Clock... All of them brilliant, but this was played constantly in 2001, and routinely caught me at my trashiest!
Never Enough Boris Dlugosch feat. Roisin Murphy
|
Drink To Get Drunk differentGear versus Sia
With its immediately recognisable intro, and one of the summer`s classic lyrics, another perfect Amnesia anthem, home to my favourite line, "Don`t ask me why I smoke, I don`t know... but I drink to get drunk... I use booze to unlock me"! Classic... :-)
Always Bent
|
Aquella Esquina Negrocan
|
Guitarra G G-Club pres. Banda Sonora
Played everywhere, but at its best on the terrace of Space as a gentle breeze (well, the giant fans, Space has a breeze even when the wind isn`t blowing) lifts the sweat from your body in the late-morning sunshine...
Clap Your Hands Africanism/Edony feat. Hossam Ramzy
Thanks to DJ Jeffrey Hinton for using this in his set at Factory, otherwise I`d never have found out what is was! Harj also played it to great effect at Fiction recently, but it was Amnesia`s DJ Oliver who used this difficult to mix track, as one of his staple encores at La Troya Asesina, throughout 2001. There`s nothing quite as inspiring as hundreds of happy ravers doing exactly as "Ebony" tells them, and enthusiastically clapping their hands on queue! For me, THE highlight of Oliver`s closing set! :-)
God`s Child Big Bang Theory
Epic...
Finally Kings of Tomorrow
For a long time I thought this had the worst lyric of any record going, with cheesy lines such as, "came along like a thief in the night..." Then I found out what the lyric was about. When you know that the words are about coping with the death of a loved one, the true poignancy of this track becomes apparent, and dancing to it becomes an emotional release. Deservedly named Song Of The Year at the 4th Annual DJ Awards in September.
Keep Control Sono (Terry Lee Brown Jr Vocal Mix)
I spent weeks browsing the record shops of Ibiza asking for and looking for this track which I thought was called "Frequency"... fortunately, Bar Angelo`s barman-cum-DJ Javier played it one night, finally putting out of my misery and also directing me towards one of the best compilation albums I`ve ever bought. As with many of my anthems, routinely played as an `encore` by DJ Oliver at La Troya Asesina... If you haven`t caught on yet, the encores at La Troya routinely went on past 10am... Sometimes I`d just get there for the encores... The only other DJ I`ve heard playing this track is Steven Black at Fist in London!
Love Is In The Air Milk & Sugar
| Already a fan of Strictly Ballroom, hearing this on the terrace of Space that first time was guaranteed to bring a smile to my face... By the time of the Carry On At Space closing party (yes, I`ve still got the surgical cap, but I only wear it at home now), this was one of my happiest tunes of the year...
|
Rise Soul Providers
One of the few `oldies` to still be played constantly in Amnesia, possibly a fave of the DJs, but definitely hugely popular with Amnesia regulars!
Babarabatiri The Gypsymen
|
Sputnik Stylus Trouble
|
Tracey In My Room EBTG vs Soul Vision
One of the all-time greatest Ibiza anthems was Everything But The Girl`s "Missing You", which I`d hear every night at Anfora during a life-changing two-weeks in Ibiza in September `95... Six years later, the beautiful vocals of Tracey Thorn were again the source of some of the most intense emotions to grace any head-shakers on the sun-kissed terraces of Ibiza`s daytime clubs...
Teenage Dirtbag Wheatus
From a particularly wild Manumission (the penultimate of 2001), where the encores on the terrace (music from the Matineé Group) included this, Nirvana`s "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the themes from Fame, Dallas and The A-Team (amongst others)... and some of the happiest people I`ve ever seen out clubbing! Leave the attitude at hom... :-)
It`s Raining Men Weather Girls
Another encore, again from Barcelona`s Matineé Group boys, but this time on the terrace at Space... there was a brief hestitation, while we weighed up the pros and cons, before we all simultaneously lost our collective credibility!
Underground Celeda
This should probably have been way higher in the list, since Oliver used it regularly in his encore set, but it took me ages to track down the track for myself. In the end, it was Anfora's resident DJ, Manolo, who pointed me in the right direction!
