2002 saw the rise and fall of Trade in Ibiza, a major blow to Amnesia's reputation, and my first experience of one of Amnesia's legendary foam parties!

Trade took their first steps into the Ibiza club scene in 99, at El Divino, but made their Ibiza reputation in 2000, when they hosted Manumission's Back Room at Privilege on Monday nights. This in turn led to a second successful year alongside Manumission in 2001, and the birth of a spin-off party in conjunction with Brussels club Strong (don't worry, even Belgians haven't heard of it) on Thursday nights. With what must have been a very tempting offer, Trade moved again in 2002, joining another hugely successful UK gay club, Salvation, and Amsterdam's Cockring, for Kinky Trade, replacing the Blue Rose as hosts of Amnesia's terrace on Sunday nights.

Despite a slow start, in what was the quietest July in Ibiza in many years, Kinky Trade's reputation as a home of quality house from UK-based DJs such as Gonzalo, David Jimenez and Steve Thomas, soon saw numbers at Amnesia's formerly quiet Sunday-night foam parties rise and rise, and by the time of the (unscheduled) final party on the 18th August, Kinky Trade was second only to La Troya Asesina as one of Ibiza's most popular gay/polysexual parties. As with most of the successful 'gay' parties on the island, word of mouth built on an initial gay following, to create a highly successful polysexual party, based on the quality of its production values and music.

Kinky Trade final party, Amnesia (18/08/2002)So, why did it stop? All involved had worked hard to make the night a success, Trade's Natalie working tirelessly to ensure the success of a night which also became a regular weekend draw for Salvation promoter Steve, and Trade's own founder, Lawrence Malice, who enjoyed the party so much he stayed and stayed!

After Kinky Trade stopped, the only beneficiary was Pacha, whose own polysexual party, Scandal, soon regained its position as the leading Sunday night out. And I never had an excuse to venture into a foam party again...just one of the many things I did to keep my clients happy!

My lasting memories of the final night, however, will be of the victims of the pile-up on the road to Amnesia, hopefully the last of too many clubbers killed in road accidents in Ibiza in recent years...
