PACHA

Avd. ocho de agosto s/n, 07800 Ibiza, Spain
ring +34 971 31 36 00
Website: pacha.com

Open all year - 7 days-a-week from May-October

The most annoying thing about Pacha is that it is such a good club. It's annoying because it is also one of the most over-priced clubs on the island, and during 2002 routinely hiked up its drink and door charges once the season had kicked off.

It's quite possible that the reason Pacha charges so much is because it has exclusive residencies from some of the world's best DJs, including Morillo, Emerson and Roger Sanchez, the latter moving from El Divino in 2002 with his Monday-night 'Release Yourself' parties. Following the success of 'Subliminal Sessions Underwater' in 2002, Darren Emerson will be taking 'Underwater' to Tuesdays, replacing Paul Oakenfold's 'Perfecto', while Erick Morillo will continue 'Subliminal Sessions' in its own right on Wednesdays.

Pacha parade (Pic by Martin, 02/08/2001) That long-time staple of Friday nights, Ministry of Sound, is expected to replace Made in Italy on Thursday nights, freeing up Fridays for some home-grown Pacha parties. What Made in Italy and Ministry of Sound have to make of this is anybody's guess, but don't be surprised if one or both of them follow the trail of disgruntled Pacha parties and find a new home at Amnesia or Privilege, both of which need a good hook for Friday nights in 2003. Hopefully, the home-grown parties will build on the popularity of the venue and its resident DJs throughout the winter, and continue to provide a local club for local people.

2000 saw Pacha launch its first 'polysexual' night, Scandal (see Parties), which looks set to continue during 2003, sharing Sundays with Pacha's longest-established party, the once-a-month 'Flower Power'. Also popular with the gay crowd is Monday night's Global Room attraction, Anna-Marie's 'Tormenta Hormonal', with DJs Giangu (pictured with Anna-Marie) and Kae.

Pacha can be at its best out-of-season, as it is one of the few venues on the island to remain open all year round (admittedly only on Fridays, Saturdays and fiestas between October and May), and has a strong team of resident DJs, including Sarah Main and Angel Linde. The entrance fee and drink prices are also a lot more appealing outside the height of the season!

Martin & Simona, Pacha (Pic by John, 01/04/2004)This picture is from my first visit to Pacha in 2000, with island-resident and Anfora bar-tart Simona, though the venue itself is one of the island's oldest and celebrated 30 years in 2003. Despite increased competition on the Marina side of Ibiza Town, from El Divino, Angel's El Cel and Lucifer, Pacha remains the strongest of the island's big clubs.

As anticipated, Made in Italy made the big leap to Amnesia in 2003, to great success, though naturally Pacha carried on regardless, having probably its busiest summer ever. Pure Pacha, Ministry's replacement on Friday-nights, was packed beyond belief, and they were turning hundreds away every week, but door charges still made it the most exorbitantly-priced party on the island. As nice as it was hearing Bob Sinclair play live - at Fuck Me, I'm French! - the night itself was pure hell. If you want Pure Pacha, stick to any month outside August!
