If Amnesia gave birth to the Balearic Beat, Privilege (or Ku as it was then known), is what made it BIG!

Just a couple of kliks down the road from Amnesia, Privilege is the 'World's Largest Club' (and that's according to the Guinness Book of Records®, no less), with oodles of space to run around and get lost in. And a swimming pool...

Privilege hosts what is arguably Ibiza's most famous club, Manumission, the sheer spectacle of which is equally popular with gay and straight visitors. UK gay club Trade shared the venue with Manumission on Mondays, and held a gay party in their own right on Thursdays for a couple of years but moved onto Amnesia in 2002. The same year saw the debut of a new gay party, F*** House, on Tuesday nights. The Coco-Loco room continued to be hosted by Barcelona's Matinée Group, and remained packed every night.

Privilege parade (pic by Martin, 06/2001) Privilege doesn't share Amnesia's success at present, and is finding it difficult to recover lost ground. UK club Renaissance also moved to Amnesia in 2002, and only Tunnel (on Sundays), Friday's Xtravaganza and the mainstay of the venue, Manumission, returned last year.

Aside from Tuesday's F*** House, also stepping into the breach in 2002 were Balearic People, which became a regular Saturday-nighter after filling in at the end of the previous season as 7 Balearic People. Going head-to-head with La Troya Asesina on Wednesday nights, Portugese party Iberican Sound filled the vacant Renaissance slot. One of the most intriguing new nights was Your Day on Thursdays, which combined the Y2K success of Renaissance Live by featuring live pop PAs, but touched on the current retro vibe by featuring classic 80s artists such as ABC, Soft Cell and Human League.

In 1990, a brief flirtation with the club scene saw me visit Ku during a memorable holiday that September. As memorable as the holiday was, unfortunately, all I can remember of the Ku experience is that the club was mind-numbingly big, and there was a pool and trees and lots of people. And I didn't go back for ten years... I'm hoping Aidan's memories of the night are better than mine, as I'd love to fill in that particular blank spot!

Privilege is a great place to visit on the right night, but if you want to see the venue at its best, go to Manumission, or the Opening or Closing Parties. Privilege can be quite an awe-inspiring experience.
