Open June-September
Marking the start to the clubbing season when it opens its doors on the first Sunday of June, and the end to same just four months later with its Closing Party on the last Sunday of September, Space is probably the most popular club in Ibiza, and is repeatedly voted the best club in the World. I think it's fair to say that after Pacha, Space also holds the record as the most expensive club in Ibiza. Considering what's on offer, however, it can be a lot better value than comparable clubs back in the UK. For their Closing Party in 2002, I wrapped up work for the day at a reasonable noon, in order to get into the club before 1pm for 'just' 30 Euros (about 20 quid)... I left 19 hours later, when it closed at 8am the following morning, and you can't complain about that! The strangest thing in 2002 was how Space became the venue I went to more than any other, strange because during one of my first visits the previous year, for one of the infamous Manumission Carry Ons, I was freaked out by the heavy-handed security and how aggressively straight the whole place seemed, and swore never to return! 2001's big success story, Thursday morning's gay party from Matinée Group, was replaced in 2002 by the first ever official La Troya Asesina Carry On, Matinée moving to replace that other gay fave, Space's very own Café Olé, on Saturdays. Manumission's Carry On remained as busy as ever on Tuesday mornings, Tonic had theirs on Fridays, and Ministry of Sound continued to hold court on Saturday mornings, only this time alongside the afore-mentioned Matinée Group and newcomers Gorgeous. La Troya aside, the only other new daytime party was In Bed with Barbara Tucker (resident at El Divino the year before) on Wednesdays, but there was increased night-time activity with Carl Cox playing 6 consecutive Thursday nights mid-season, and the beautifully-packaged Spanish club, La Comunidad, on Fridays. As with previous years, however, the biggest draw at Space throughout the summer was We Love Sundays, running for a massive 22 hours every week, and always packed. More on the Carry On, Matinée Group, We Love Sundays and Opening and Closing Parties in the party section, but once you've been bitten by the Space bug, there's no turning back... If you've yet to go to Space, you only think you know clubbing!
